Gene McGowan, Sr.

Founder and Chief Executive Officer

Gene has over 9 years of identifying, structuring and closing private equity opportunities and more than 28 years experience in the securities industry. As a broker, he managed a book of business worth more than $100 million dollars. Then, as the Chief Operating Officer of a regional brokerage firm, Gene directed a network of 100 branch offices responsible for more than $400 million in revenue. He also led the implementation of a new broker compensation structure and online broker training. Gene currently sits on the Investment Committee for Sioux Falls Area Community Foundation and is a Board Member of the Sioux Falls State Theater Company.

Dan Newell, CPA


Dan has directed over 100 mergers and acquisitions. His background is in operations, accounting and finance. His prior experience includes being a Chief Financial Officer of a publicly traded energy company and coordinating over $1 billion in public and private financing. In addition, Dan’s experience includes serving as the CEO of a significant operating entity where he managed operations with more than $470 million in revenue, 63 locations and 3,000 employees. Dan currently sits on the Governor’s Council of Economic Advisors for the State of South Dakota and is a Board Member for the Sioux Falls Specialty Hospital, McCrossan's Boy's Ranch and Post 307 Baseball.

Larry Thornton

Vice President

Larry has several years of experience in identifying and structuring private equity opportunities for McGowan Capital Group. As President of a local manufacturing company, Larry has also served as Director of Operations for a regional financial services company, where he was responsible for oversight, compliance and training of 60+ brokers. As Deputy Treasurer for the State of Iowa, he was responsible for structuring and raising over $2 billion for state projects.

Karen Ruby

Office Manager

Karen joined McGowan Capital in 2014. She brings a wealth of experience from a variety of management, financial and administrative fields to include customer service, accounting, sales, information technology and marketing. Her role here will include property management, Topgrading training, social media strategy and website management. She comes to us as a military retiree with 24 years of active duty service in the U.S. Marine Corps and South Dakota Air National Guard.

Dennis Neeser


Dennis has been a practicing attorney for over 40 years with a certified specialty in real estate. He co-founded a credit entity during the 1980’s Midwest farm crisis for the purposes of acquiring and working out bank credits; that was expanded into a nationwide presence continuing over 25 years. He personally assessed risk/pricing/outcomes and attended to workouts of every variety of primarily commercial debt. He is a former bank director, community college director, county attorney prosecutor, author and teacher of criminal procedure. He currently contributes time in mentoring students and helping non-profit organizations.
